NACCC is this Weekend! Here's Some Info!

The North American Cycle Courier Championships, or NACCC, is coming to Atlanta this weekend! We are getting stoked. This is going to be a full weekend of bike related activities. We sat down with head organizer Matt Reeves and asked a few questions.

What is NACCC?

NACCC stands for the North American Cycle Courier Championships. It is an annual event in it's thirteenth installment that brings couriers from all over the continent together for a weekend. It is part reunion, part race, all party.

Do you pronounce NACCC “knacks”?

For some reason people put an "s" on the end. The easiest way to say it is "the Courier Championships."

How many messengers are you expecting?

We are expecting at least one hundred fifty to two hundred messengers and at least 300 total to include locals and volunteers.

What is the format of the races?

The main event happens in two installments. For most of the day on Saturday, messengers will be competing in the qualifying round. A yet to be decided percentage, usually the top twenty five percent of these riders will move on to the champions round based on their times. The course itself is one way and will require messengers to pick up packages as if it were a day at work. They are required to pick the packages up in order but may drop them in any order they see fit. Racers will begin in staggered heats of fifteen throughout the day. Once a manifest is complete, it is turned back in and judged at the start/finish and depending on how far along the messenger is in the race, they will be given another manifest or will be told they have completed the qualifiers. The number of manifests in the qualifier will not be announced before hand.

Where can we watch the races?

Spectators can watch from any point along the course and are encouraged to volunteer at the start finish if they wish to help out in any way. As well as the racing, there will be a polo tournament and a trick competition as well. Both of these events will take place next to the start/finish line in the large parking lot on Boulevard.

Describe the non-messenger Grant Park race?

What's the format, alleycat, criterium style etc? The non messenger race is a one day version of the messenger race. It will have a Le Mans start instead of heats and it will be a one shot deal. Whoever finishes fastest in male and female categories, wins.

How much does the non-courier race cost?

The non messenger race fee is the same as the messenger fee, $50 USD. For that fee you will receive a racer packet with free product from sponsors, possibly raffle tickets, and more plus entry to all of the official NACCC parties free of charge as well as all of the discounts on drinks that go with it. The prizes in the non messenger race are fairly substantial as well.

Who can race goldsprints?

The goldsprints aren't open to the public. The Atlanta Series Campions Round will happen first, at 8 pm on friday night, and the courier goldsprints, which are only opening to couriers will happen afterwards.

What other events can non-couriers participate in?

Non couriers can participate in all of the side events, i.e. skids, sprints, track stands, foot down.

Anything else?

Anyone who wants to be a volunteer. please email volunteer@dirtysouthmessengers.com. Also, check the website for updates: http://dirtysouthmessengers.com. See you soon!

With a quick note from Alexander:
tour de playgrounds is an alley cat in which the checkpoints are playgrounds through out the city. at each checkpoint racers will have to perform a task using the playground or surrounding area, such as swing jump, slip 'n' slide, run through the playgrounds, etc. this year there will be a tattoo checkpoint as well as some that focus on creating a playground in a place where there is'nt one. race begins at central park playground, registration starts at 5:30pm race starts at 6:45pm after party is at highland inn ballroom, doors open at 8:30 cost to race is $10 or $7 to get in to after party for non-racers. at the after party there will be bands (Buffalo Bangers, Meut, Hawkeye Pierce, DJ Santiago) there will be and art show live screen printing open canvasses, drinks, and a performace piece by Dodekapus art collective.

Living Walls Alley Cat

This giant octopus is terrifying
because she eats the asparagus that grows out of her own head

Alley cats are not just about speed, they are also about knowledge, flexibility and luck. Friday's Living Walls took the last three aspects to a new level by shifting the date, the time and the starting location on us, confusing a lot of people. Registration for the event was at 4pm, too early for many others.

By the time the time the race started, only eleven hardy souls were perseverant enough to show up to the starting line and race this one. You know what? It was a good one! Just four stops. Show up, pick your route, hammer it out in five o'clock traffic and an hour later you were done.

Angel and Andrew.
That's Steve Cropper in the background.

When the hammering was done, it was Andrew Ricciardi that crushed this city flat and finished first, moving to 8th in the overall standings. Nathan Bouster finished second, pushing Jason Atwood down in the overall standings. Angel finished 3rd and is 7th overall. Speaking of Angel, have you seen this?

Party afterwards helped raise money for the Living Walls fund.

Here are the standings for the race and overall.
